About the Exhibition

The exhibition traces the influence, exchange, innovation, and development of ceramic art and technology between China and its Asian neighbors in ancient times. It presents a dialogue of artistry and a transmission of technique across East Asia, with China at the center of these exchanges.

Organized in four sections, the exhibition brings together more than 350 pieces (sets) of ceramics—from the black pottery of the Neolithic Hemudu culture to blue-and-white porcelain of the mid-Qing dynasty. Following the thread of China’s overseas ceramics trade, it shows how Chinese porcelain served as a carrier of culture, linking peoples and nations across Asia. Out of this exchange grew ceramic traditions that shared a common technical origin while each developing its own distinctive character.
