About the Department

The Department of Design works at the meeting point of art, design, and technology, bringing classical traditions into dialogue with contemporary practice and an international outlook. Since the founding of the School of Art and Archaeology in May 2019, the Department’s faculty and students have built a strong record in teaching, research, and the education of a new generation of designers.

Distinctions

The Art and Technology program was named a National First-Class Undergraduate Program in 2023.

It has been ranked A+ (top 2%) in the Art and Technology field by the Shanghai Ranking (Soft Science) for three consecutive years, 2023–2025.

The Art and Technology Program

The Art and Technology program connects science, design, and art. Guided by the idea that art and technology, tradition and innovation, advance together, it draws on the School’s deep strengths in art theory, fine arts, archaeology, and museology, with equal attention to technological progress and the creation of beauty.

The program integrates art and design with frontier technologies, cultural heritage, and rural revitalization. Working with artificial intelligence and big data, it educates designers with a broad, interdisciplinary foundation in art and technology and strong professional skills—capable of sustained design innovation in areas such as digital-humanities design, the creative transformation of classical Chinese visual heritage, and design that supports rural revitalization.
